New York Fashion Week is finally upon us and what better way to usher in the new Spring 2011season than with an exciting roster of things to come? From buzzed about designers showing for the first time to the hotspots where they'll be hanging out, here is what we have on our fashion week radar thus far.

1. New Blood. There are more new designers showing this season that one could shake a stiletto at. Among the ones we're most excited to see? New York-based Mandy Coon with her devilishly downtown aesthetic that was born out of a bunny-eared leather purse; the pitch perfect haute hippie designs of Gregory Parkinson, who is a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist; and William Tempest - a British prodigy favored by the high fashion priestesses across the pond such as Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham.

2. Scorching Hotpots. Aside from the reopening of the (space formerly known as) The Boom Boom Room at The Standard Hotel, expect to see the well-heeled crowd angling to get into Le Baron. That little hipster joint from Paris will open in Chinatown this week. A similar, if not more rocker-y, assemblage will surely congregate at the re-opened dive bar Don Hill's where Rose Bar's Nur Khan and DJ extraordinaire Paul Sevigny (brother of Chloé) have taken over.

3. Fashion's Night Out! Where else can you have a karaoke contest judged by the Olsens? (Barneys New York.) Hang out with Jessica Alba and André Leon Talley as Janelle Monae performs? (Ralph Lauren.) Or be styled by fashion gurus such as Oscar de la Renta and Rachel Roy? (Macy's.) It's all happening on Sept. 10th! Better bring your credit cards, these design darlings aren't coming out for their health.

4. The Return of Muscle Milk. Even Marc Jacobs has admitted to indulge in this protein-packed refreshment. This time it coming to the tents in...a diet version! With a tag line like, "Get Fabuless," who could resist? Certainly not fashionistas with cinched waists!

5. Celebrity Showdowns! There are always a few starlets vying for the title of "Fashion Ubiquitor" each season. (In the past Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan reigned supreme...unfortunately said outings may have contributed to their stints in rehab.) The Gossip Girls - that's you, Leighton and Blake - have definitely put in their time of late. Will they continue to stand their ground? Only time will tell. Lest we forget that those L.A. sisters of swing, Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe Kardashian are attending the Bebe event on Sept. 14th.

6. The Battle of the Bags: Much like celebrities, there is also a handbag that tends to lord above the rest during fashion week. Lately we've seen plenty of peeps toting Lanvin's "Happy" bag, which means it could be over before it even started! The alternatives? Céline's Boston bag or perhaps the Fendi Peekaboo. Anyway you slice it, it's a fun distraction to play "name that bag" while you're waiting for the shows to start.

7. The (Newly Emancipated) Sheriffs of Sharp-Shooting! Billy Farrell, Neil Rasmus, and Joe Schilderhorn - a truly talented trio of photographers - recently branched out on their own to form the Billy Farrell Agency. Having spun off from Patrick McMullan, the (until now) reigning king of nightlife snaps, we're excited to see them work their magic front row, behind-the-scenes, and everywhere in between at the M.A.C./Milk Studios space, where they've been hired as the in-house photogs. (P.S. Brides, they do weddings, too!)

What are you going to do with your old jeans this fall?

Vancouver's Covenant House, a downtown charity organization that supports homeless youth on Vancouver streets, has put a call out for old jeans, sweaters, coats and shoes. If you have clothing that you know you aren't going to wear again this fall/winter season, now's the time to drop it off:

These aren't kids that are too lazy to work. Covenant House was a charity supported by a former organization I used to work for. I was fortunate enough to tour their Drake St facility one Christmas. A lot of these kids are running away from abusive homes. They need donations in order to stay warm and dry now that the weather is turning.

Thanks for your support, Vancouver.

Ksubi Eyewear & Kane Skennar. A Fashionable Match.

above: images from three different Ksubi eyewear campaigns, all shot by Kane Skennar

In addition to their apparel and eyewear, Australian fashion brand Ksubi combines fashion, culture, art and music. Their irreverent runway antics at Australia's Fashion Week (like releasing live rats onstage) their late night parties, published books, art installations and music events distinguish them from other fashion brands.

Known mainly for their denim apparel that appeals to celebs and hipsters alike, I find their advertising photography - specifically for their eyewear collections over the past several years- is often as compelling, if not more so, than the actual products.

Their latest eyewear collection for 2011 -- Eye, Eye -- features 11 new pairs of eyeglasses with an industrial style and fashionable appeal. And the photographs make them even more attractive.

While Ksubi eyewear and the ad campaigns are often blogged about, the unsung hero, who is rarely mentioned, is Australian photographer Kane Skennar. Close friends with the Ksubi team he shot this most recent ad campaign as well as the "Book Club" Collection of Ksubi Eyewear from the previous year and other Ksubi eyewear ad campaigns, including the notorious Dickheads campaign (shown later in this post).

2011 Ksubi Eye Eye campaign, shot by Kane Skennar in 2010:

The above campaign was styled by in-house creatives at Ksubi. The models featured are: Heidi Harrington (South African/ Australian), Rose Smith (a new model from Perth), model of the moment, Bambi, and two male models who are friends of ksubi and long-term ksubi ambassadors, Dion Antony, and 19 year old Jann Cruraszkiewicz from Melbourne making his modelling debut.

Ksubi Book Club campaign, shot by Kane Skennar in 2009:

Another Ksubi eyewear campaign, shot by Kane Skennar (year unknown):

One of their most hilarious ad campaigns for Ksubi shot by Skennar featured eyeglasses on male genitalia, turning the male member from a penis to a proboscis. These images toured as a photographic exhibition ‘Magnum Opus’, shown in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Paris. The exhibition highlighted the ‘Ksubi for dickheads’ sunglasses range, and was also be seen in LA and NY.

The 2006 Ksubi for Dickheads campaign shot by Kane Skennar:

Kane Skennar has an impressive portfolio with editorial, beauty, portraiture and more photography. See his work here.

Ksubi, who is best-known for their denim apparel, music affiliations and art installations (and sadly, for their financial troubles), was co-founded and directed by surfers Dan Single (who also goes by the name of Dangerous Dan in the Sydney based DJ six-piece "Bang Gang"), George Gorrow, Paul Wilson and Oscar Wright in 2002. Initially the brand was named Tsubi, but was sued in 2006 by Tsubo and as a result, changed their name to Ksubi.

a big thanks to Ksubi and Kane Skennar for the information and images.

Joe Biden Hands Out Hot Dogs, Thanks Bush For "Honoring Troops" On Colbert

In front of an audience of active troops and veterans, Vice President Biden was the guest on The Colbert Report Wednesday night in a celebration of the end of the combat mission in Iraq. The tone was fairly nonpolitical in its focus on acknowledging the efforts of the men and women who served: "Tonight is for the troops," Colbert said at the beginning of the broadcast.

Biden was introduced in amusing fashion, revealed to be the dude serving hot dogs to the troops in the audience.

Things got a bit more serious when Biden sat down with Colbert. The vice president seemed a tad nervous sitting with the host, though he answered his questions about the next chapter in Iraq and the best way for Americans to honor the troops pretty articulately and with a sense of humor. And when Colbert asked about former president Bush's role, Biden expressed his gratitude to George W. While he thanked Bush for certain, specific things, he did make a point of emphasizing their disagreement on policy (a point Colbert entertainingly riffed on).
