Ivan Decker: Leaf-Hand, Fish-Hand, GIANTS IV
One of his hand is a fish. The other is a leaf. But Vancouver comedian Ivan Decker doesn’t let his his lack of opposable digits keep him from making people laugh. High-fives are a little awkward and he has a harder time holding onto a microphone. And sure, not everyone is able to relate to his whole “don’t you hate it when your leaf hand wilts” bit, but Ivan Decker doesn’t let it keep him down.  In fact, he credits his weird hands as the reason he got into comedy in the first place. Ivan Decker has been steadily building a devoted following in Vancouver through his tireless work on the stand-up comedy circuit. Known for his accessible observational humour and charming musings about life as a Vancoverite, Decker is a is like a scrappy boxer in the funny ring. He’ll hit you with a quick one-two fish-leaf combo and you’ll be screaming for more. In this video, produced by Weekend Leisure and GIANTS Comedy, Ivan “Float Like a Fish, Sting Like a Leaf” Decker is cast opposite Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan. It’s the second edition in a new video mini-series entitled ‘The Quest for the Holy Tail’. It all leads up to the fourth instalment of GIANTS Comedy, an ongoing series of big-thinking comedy projects at The Cultch. GIANTS IV: EPIC SEX ED is at The Cultch for one night only on Saturday, February 18th. In addition to Ivan Decker, Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan, the show also features Dave Shumka, Sean Devlin, and DuoTone, as well brand new video from Weekend Leisure and more! The Proof – Ashley Forshaw
Ashley Forshaw is an experienced, enthusiastic and passionate makeup artist practising her craft in the Vancouver area. She is proficient in all aspects of makeup application from fashion to airbrushing to prosthetics. Her experience includes makeup for movies, weddings,  promotional campaigns and magazine articles to name a few. She loves sharing her knowledge and is currently an instructor at Blanche MacDonald School. Her most recent special project was a year long effort creating a series of photo shoots which she incorporated into a dayplanner that was sold to raise funds for the ALS Society of Canada. (www.adreamcometrueforals.com) When not pursuing her desire to learn and practice all aspects of makeup, she is an eager outdoors enthusiast as she loves to snowboard and skateboard. Dance is also an interest as shown by her involvement in both hip hop and Zumba classes. The Proof 01 My work is all about painting the body and face. In an average week there is always one nude model in my house. This model was painted to show the animals effected in the BP oil spill. 02 My Inspiration board, without this I would never get anything done, or at least never get anything done well. 03  I also create small prosthetic makeups, and in order to do this it is necessary to take a life cast of the model or actor. This image is a stone replica of an actresses face. From this I created a fake nose and chin, that was applied to the actress. 04 Last year I created a 2012 calendar for the ALS Society of Canada. I produced 13 images all based around fairytales. This is one of my favourite makeup. Face prosthetic, head to toe body paint, fake teeth, and a fuzzy fur texture covering the full body. 05 Some of my brushes, without these my work would look quite rough. It’s like being an online editor without a computer. 06 In addition to designing and creating the face and body makeups for the models, I also created the skirts. I am no fashion designer. My skill with fabric, consists of duck tape, fabric glue and chicken wire, but surprisingly one would never know. 07 In action. This was a body paint I designed for the Vancouver IMATS show. when you wore the appropriate 3D glasses, all of the organs appeared to come out from the body 08 A great combination of all things makeup. Beauty makeup, prosthetics, paint, and contact lenses. The Questions What neighbourhood do you live in? I live in North Vancouver What do you do and where? I am a makeup artist and body painter. I work freelance all over B.C. as well I am an airbrush instructor at Blanche Macdonald Centre for applied design. What are you working on? Currently, I am designing a body paint for a competition in Florida Where can we find your work? www.fairytalesforals.com http://www.facebook.com/ashley.forshaw http://gallery.me.com/ashleyforshaw#100008 www.canadiantalentfarm.com Google Me.

The Pop In! Volume Eight- Gina Rossi
We’re knocking on doors and taking a look around peoples’ homes to see where your neighbours relax, hang out with their pets, and create! It’s an invitation to snoop, but we’re staying away from their medicine cabinets. Photos: ayeeloy604@gmail.com | @art3fact Our Host: Gina Rossi and Steve Wood Whose that? Gina is a realtor and Steve is a communications coordinator Beverage Offered: Chai Rooibos Tea Where do you live? Steve-We live by Oakridge in an old 1950s vintage penthouse, built by one of Vancouver’s first architects who did “New Formalism”. This is one of the first apartment high-rises in the city. It’s kind of a form of modernism. It’s the same guy that did the planetarium; Gerald Hamilton. He designed the planetarium and the really cool Greek Orthodox church on Arbutus Street. He also did a lot of towers and office buildings downtown. He’s like the first guy to bring the modern style into Vancouver.  How long have you lived here? Gina-We’ve been here about 2 and half years. What attracted you to this place? Steve-Architecture. Gina-It was the architecture and the really big deck and the views. I’d seen a couple of really cool stand alone penthouses come up in the West End, and when this one came up, I decided that this kind of style was what I really wanted; a stand alone penthouse with just one little unit on top of the building, huge decks all the way around with big views.  Also there’s enough space for us to have a bedroom, and for each of us to have an office. We really like being in a space where there’s no one on the same floor as us. What do you do? Gina-I’m a realtor and because of that, I see lot of homes and so I’m kind of particular about what I like and it’s important for me to be in a space that I like a lot. We like to be in a space that’s a little more unique and just has a little bit more personality to it.  Does your place help you work? Gina-Sometimes-because I want to be home and working and seeing all the views. Other times, it’s 5pm and the sun in setting and all I want to do is jump in the hot tub and field my calls from there. What are your favourite parts of the place? Gina-I really like the kitchen. I like the huge island. I love the tiles. When we did the kitchen we tried to do a nice contemporary kitchen but tried to keep the same lines that are in keeping with the era of the building, so we chose the rounded fridge and the slightly rounded stove and hood fan. We went with walnut cabinetry to match the walnut wall panels in the living room and dining room. I love that I can watch the sunset over the mountains while I’m cooking dinner. Sometimes if I have somewhere to go and it’s just before sunset, I’ll be late because I don’t want to leave. You can see the Gulf Islands, you can see the water, you can see ferries coming in the south side, you can see the North Shore mountains and downtown on the North side and you get really beautiful sunrises over Mount Baker. I also really like the tiles in the bathroom. We tried to pick tiles that were not standardly used, but had a reference to the era. The ones in the bathroom are bright and colourful, they’re recycled glass tiles that we ordered from Spain. They are called “Joy” *laughs* and they do fill me with joy when I’m taking a shower.  Now you are moving-so what will you miss the most? Gina-The views and the deck. Sitting in the hot tub, in the winter, watching the sunset is pretty much the best thing I can think of, especially if you have an ice cream sandwich

BCITMA presents Think/Share with Darren Yada, Christ Walts and Dave Olson
This coming Wednesday I’m hosting the first ever Think/Share event being put on by the BCIT Marketing Association at Guilt & Co in Gastown. Think/Share is Vancouver’s newest speaker series and it’s dedicated to the city’s advertising and marketing industry, with the aim of bringing together professionals and students alike to listen to some folks talk on a subject and then have engage in dialogue. The subject of this inaugural evening is “Brand Management through Social Media” and I’ll be moderating an expert panel made up of Darren Yada of Rethink, Chris Walts of TribalDDB and Dave Olson of Hootsuite. If you work in marketing and advertising I can promise an interesting night of conversation followed by a musical set by the Junebugs. HERE is all of the info and below is Dave from Hootsuite’s recent TEDxCAPU talk to give you an idea of what you’re in for, just in case you’ve never met him or seen/heard him speak…

Nicholson Road Week 79 – Brookswood, Langley Township
Nicholson Road is an ongoing photo project aimed at sharing and celebrating the different communities in Metro Vancouver. Each week Vancouver Is Awesome will be featuring an image from the previous week, shot in one of the many ‘hoods around town in order to draw your attention a little bit outside of the hyper-focus that we usually have on the City of Vancouver. Metro Vancouver Is Awesome, and you should get out and explore it! What do you think you’re looking at? Take a guess. Yeah it’s water, good job. Maybe a pond or a lake of some kind? What if I told you it was a naturally reclaimed gravel pit? Awesome, hey? Many years ago, this site in Brookswood out in Langley (the Township, not the City) served as a gravel pit until the supply was exhausted and the company moved on. Rather than quickly being reclaimed to further develop the blossoming suburb or filling the deepest points to prevent flooding, the land near 204th and 32nd ave was left for mother nature to look after. And she did a pretty marvellous job. The local community thought so too, and grew to enjoy having this little bit of natural paradise in their backyard even if it meant creating gaps in the fence built to keep the public out, and protect the Township against any liabilities. But really, who wants to enjoy such a gem from the other side of a chain-link fence? Imagine then, when I tell you that in 2007 a couple proposals came forth to fill most of the site and build a bunch of homes, or a couple soccer fields on as an expansion of the Noel Booth Community Park located just to the north. That’s when the community got involved, and the Township listened. Over the next couple of years plans to ‘build’ a park out of the existing land developed into more of an ‘enjoy what we already have’ approach, by adding a few trails, signage, seating areas here and there, and maybe a bridge or two. Why bother shaping a new lake and surrounding parkland when nature had already done a pretty fantastic job on her own? If you’re curious to learn more about Brookswood Pond, including updates on the gradual enhancement of the park, check out http://www.brookswoodpond.ca/ Archives of the Nicholson Road project can be found HERE.
