Although yesterday’s numbers haven’t yet been tallied, it’s estimated that 49 million cases of beer were consumed during last year’s Super Bowl1. While everyone slides back into work this morning I figured an ale-themed archive photo roundup would be in order. 1890 – Employees of Doering and Marstrand Brewery in Mount Pleasant. He started Brewery Creek on Main and 16th in 1888, he built Canadian Brewing and Malting by 1908, and later amalgamated several companies to form Vancouver Breweries. The brewery as located on 11th and Yew, and was eventually sold to Carling O’Keefe. Doering & Marstrand Brewery in Mount Pleasant was also sold by Charles Doering and became a part of Vancouver Breweries3. Doering had a saloon on Water Street called the Stag & Pheasant. 1926 – Vancouver Breweries at 11th and Yew. Archives item# CVA 99-3063. Photographer: Stuart Thomson. 1944 – Vancouver Breweries. With another year until we get a statutory holiday in BC, February could be looking pretty gloomy at this point. However, with events to celebrate the two year Vancouver 2010 Olympic anniversary, a city-wide festival, a film festival, a comedy fetival, and more, the February 2012 calendar is looking pretty bright. Tourism Surrey’s 45 in 45
© 2004-2011 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.com. If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission. Tourism Surrey recently launched a campaign called 45 in 45 that lists off 45 activities, sights, and events that you can enjoy within 45 kilometers or 45 minutes of the City of Surrey. Through blog posts and social media outreach, they’re promoting BC’s second most populous city as a destination and affordable alternative. Photo credit: rbrtwhite on Flickr “Surrey is a fairly central location when you do a 360 degree look around,” says Tourism Surrey’s Jane Stark. “We’ve got the Fraser Valley, White Rock, the USA border, Vancouver, and more.” The focus of the campaign is to promote the city’s hotel offerings, making it the starting point for your family visit, vacation, business trip, or getaway. Fusion Festival – Photo credit: John Bollwitt & John Bollwitt on Flickr Fusion Festival – Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr From parks and recreation, to Surrey Eagles hockey, annual festivals, Crescent Beach, shopping, and award-winning golf courses, Stark also told me they want the idea of “Surrey is closer than you think” to stick in people’s minds. The site is just getting started but they’re already running a contest with Central City Brewing. Until February 15, 2012 you can post a photo of a beer you’re drinking on Twitter, including @45in45 and @centralcitybrew, for your chance to win a $50 gift card to BC’s Best Brew Pub (according to the 2012 CAMRA Vancouver Beer Awards). Watch for more promotions over the next few weeks including a few guest posts from yours truly as I support my hometown. Follow 45 in 45 on Twitter or Facebook for more information. © 2004-2011 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.com. Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition
© 2004-2011 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.com. If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission. While at the BC Sports Hall of Fame I came across the inductee information for Trev Deeley (1920-2000), a name associated with the award-winning Harley-Davidson dealership. When I happened to drive by the Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition on Boundary Road not even 24 hours later I took it as a sign — this was a story to cover. Fred and Trev Deeley Fred Deeley Sr. opened a 12-foot-wide store at 1075 Granville in 1914. In 1916, he acquired a Harley-Davidson franchise in Vancouver, becoming the brand’s second oldest dealership [source]. By 1925, the company expanded to two shops, bicycles and motorcycles, and Fred Jr. took over the motorcycle shop. They were now located on Broadway. At the age 15 Fred Jr.’s son, Fred Sr.’s grandson, Trevor started working for his father at the motorcycle shop [source]. From 1947 to 1958, [Trev] Deeley competed, won, and set a series of track records in numerous races and was a three time competitor in the 200 mile road race in Daytona Beach, Florida riding a Harley-Davidson. In 1957, Deeley retired from racing and became more involved in the motorcycle industry and community. His commitment to promoting and distributing motorcycles had helped revolutionize the industry in Canada. In 1972 Deeley was given inclusive rights for the distribution of Harley-Davidson products, and was the first Canadian appointed to the Board of Director for Harley-Davidson. He was a Canadian Motor Sports Hall of Fame Inductee in 1995, and was the only Canadian winner of the American Motorcyclists Association Dud Perkins Award. Deeley became an Inductee to the Worldwide American Motorcycle Heritage Association Hall of Fame in June, 1999. [source] In 1998, “Team Deeley” set a new landspeed record (of 150mph) at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah with a 1998 Buell S1 White Lightning. Trev Deeley, Peter Sellers, Mike Rowland and Terry Rea were part of driver Shane Kenneally’s crew. Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition The exhibition, adjacent to the dealership and a conference space, is open to the public 7 days a week. There you can browse a private collection of 250 antique, vintage, and modern models spanning over 114 years along with the “Made in America” exhibit. Terry and I took turns on the photo-op bike Replica of a Reitwagen Daimler “Riding Car” patented in 1885 Terry says you call these old ones “Barn Finds” 1896 – Roper Steam-Propelled A time when motorcycles were more expensive than cars Yes, a Harley scooter… which didn’t sell very well Trev’s own 1949 WR Racer (Black) Trev’s own 1930 DAH Hill Climber (Green) You can stop by during the day and ask for Historian Terry Rae (mentioned above) who will give you a guided tour. Terry walked me through the collection and pin-pointed the unique attributes of each piece. He explained the unique components that lead riders to give certain models specific nicknames, the innovation and evolution of motorcycles during WWI and WWII war efforts, and helped me undertand the difference between knuckle, shovel, and pan head engines. If you’re into motorcycles of any kind and their history, this collection founded by a BC motorcycling legend is well worth checking out. The Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition is located at 1875 Boundary Road, Vancouver. Admission is by donation. Follow @TrevDeeleyHD on Twitter for motorcycle news and updates. Thanks to Terry and Scott, who showed me around the rest of the store, for their time today. View my full set of photos on Flickr. © 2004-2011 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.com.
