Chiefs Links: Yahoo Sports AFC West Preview

The key addition: McCluster will get the ball in a variety of ways. The Chiefs have lined him up in the backfield, as a slot receiver, as a wide receiver, as a Wildcat quarterback and as a kickoff and punt returner. He is dangerous in the open field because of his speed and quickness, so he’ll be a threat in any of those roles.
The bottom line: The worst appears over for the Chiefs, who won four, two and four games over the past three seasons. But they have too many holes to be considered a [...]
Phins Find Special Free Agent
| The Miami Dolphins are not done tweaking their roster. Today they let go Joe Reitz, the recent offensive lineman they signed, so they could add Special Teams ace Clifton Smith. Smith, a former Pro-Bowl kick-returner will give the Dolphins their best return man since Ted Ginn.
Smith however, doesn’t come without some baggage. He suffered two concussions in the span of a month while with the Tampa Bay Buc’s. He was released last month from the team after having knee pain. He worked out for the Green Bay Packers but joined the Dolphins this afternoon.
Smith was a 2008 Pro-Bowler who averaged [...] |

Coach’s Corner: Notre Dame Offense
There will be a number of similarities between Michigan’s spread, developed by Coach Rod, and Notre Dame’s spread, developed by Coach Kelly. This may not be THE battle of the spreads on the college football landscape, but it is close enough and will be enjoyed by coaching types across the country.
Both versions of the spread will attempt to make defenses defend every inch of the field; they both will try to control the tempo and will exploit mismatches.
We will see both offenses use the quarterback read option, although it is not [...]
NFL Power Rankings
| Its that time again! Time for my NFL Power Rankings for week 1.
I rank from 32-1.
The Matt Leinart “I’m just glad I have an NFL Job” division:
32. Cleveland Browns – it’s hard to imagine the Browns getting worse, until you sign Jake Delhomme as your QB, lose your top running back to a season-ending injury, and Browns legend Jim Brown so despising what is happening he isn’t even going attend his own ring of honor ceremony. Sad. Just sad.
31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – they did nothing to improve. At least they should beat Cleveland this week.
30. Buffalo Bills – when [...] |
Talking Daniel Orton With A Sea Of Blue
| Glenn Logan of the popular Kentucky blog, A Sea Of Blue, was kind enough to take time out of his day to answer a few questions about Orlando’s first round draft pick, Center Daniel Orton. Orton spent one season at Kentucky as the backup to Sacramento Kings rookie DeMarcus Cousins, who was the fifth overall pick of the 2010 draft.
Howard the Dunk: Daniel Orton didn’t get a lot of time playing behind DeMarcus Cousins. When he was in, what stuck out to you about his game – what did he do well?

Scout Notebook 9/8/10 – Completion % vs Accuracy
| Welcome to the first edition of the Scout Notebook! At NFLMocks, we wanted to find a way to discuss in more depth how we analyze prospects. Often times people fall in love with the stat sheet (I blame fantasy football, but its too much fun to not play!) or use it as a crutch to support a player. Stats, however, clearly aren’t the only thing it takes to translate to the NFL. Just check the top ten at of any of the individual NCAA records and see how many NFL stars are there, especially the quarterback records. Quarterback is one [...] | |
Habs Sign Jeff Halpern to One Year Deal

Halpern, the former Captain of Team USA - spent last season on the beaches in Tampa and L.A, only after playing in 71 games and netting 9 goals and 11 assists and adding 38 penalty minutes. The ten year veteran started his career with Washington in 1999-00 where he amassed 29 points – 18 of [...]

Florida Panther Ticket Promo’s
| Once again another ticket promotion was announced by the Florida Panthers circus marketing department yesterday in an effort to attract season ticket holders. Or more suckers like me! Just kiddin’. I love the game, just can’t stand losing, and the marketing gimmicks. How about we just try winning! You wanna fill seats? Win games. That’s how most teams do it.
Anyway the latest price bonanza is $19.72 in honor of the Miami Dolphins undefeated season back in 1972. With football season about to begin they must have thought it was another good opportunity to drum up some business.

Jim Thome: Modern-day Babe Ruth? Um..
| I apologize to Ed and anyone who reads, I haven’t made a post in awhile. Between work, four fantasy football drafts, fantasy baseball, work, a sick family member and work, I just haven’t found the time. On top of that, the team just hasn’t really given me much to write about.
One of my readers (okay, it was my sister) asked me after my last post what I write when the Indians win. Apparently I come off somewhat bitter. Well, they didn’t win for some time after that, so I didn’t really have a chance to answer. My goal here is [...] |
Packers: Morning Links
| Jclombardi reviews morning headlines & highlights.
How we see it: A playoff team, but not a champion. 2010 season for Packers and the rest of the NFL–playoff team, but not a champion. Question–Packers have the pass rush to finish on top of the heap?
Offense preview: Finley poised to emerge as star. Tight end Jermichael Finley appears ready to become an elite player and is a big reason why the Packers could be one of the two or three most explosive teams in the NFL this year.

Husain Abdullah Will Likely Start at Safety
| Nothing is official yet, but all indications are that when the Vikings take the field Thursday night against the Saints, Husain Abdullah will be lining up at starting safety alongside Madieu Williams.
Abdullah’s promotion is something of an out-of-leftfield development, given that all training camp and preseason the competition for that spot was between Jamarca Sanford and Tyrell Johnson.
Then, in the last preaseason game, Brad Childress threw a curveball by working Abdullah into the safety rotation earlier than expected. That should’ve been a hint that Abdullah was at least in the running.
Now we know that he was more than just “in [...] |

Give Huntington to Kentucky
| I came up with this idea about two years ago, and it honestly has not caught steam (although I can see why.)
See, in the past few years, Marshall U and Huntington has been nothing but a pain for the state of West Virginia, with being the #1 obese city in America, coupling that with the ever-annoying Jamie Oliver bringing TV cameras into Huntington so he can help those people stop being fat humps; along with this ridiculous “Coal Bowl” series… not to mention the filthiness of Huntington that goes along with the crime rate. I have proposed the PERFECT solution [...]
Jaguars 2010 Roster – In Gene we trust? Part II
| We are spending time looking at the job Gene Smith is doing rebuilding the Jaguars. In Part I we looked at the offensive line and the defensive secondary. In Part II, let’s look at the defensive line and receivers.
Defensive Line.
A General Manager has five things they can do to build a better team. They can maximize the first round draft pick to find a top tier NFL player. He can find gems in the late rounds. He can evaluate and bring in great free agents, he can trade players, and he can motivate existing players to be better.
I can’t think [...] |
Sting this Thing: Aaron Gray
| On his way to the ring, weighing in at 300 pounds, he is your tub of lard, your king of Kentucky Fried Chicken, your master of McDonald’s, Aaron the “Consumer of food and rebounds” Gray.
The 7-Footer was traded from the Chicago Bulls in a trade last year for Devin Brown to help the Hornets with their severe lack of front-court depth. He is the only legitimate 7-footer on the team and still is for the time being. Now Gray supposedly does not weigh 300 pounds as a strict off-season diet consisting of “no-soda” has helped him trim his mass to [...] |
Haynesworth May Go, But Not To The Titans
| Every Redskins’ fan is ready for the ‘Haynesworth Saga’ to be over, one way or another. That’s not likely to happen this week, but it’s more likely to happen than it was last week. So, what do the tea leaves indicate? Check out these leaves:
On ESPN’s Mike and Mike this morning, Chris Mortensen stated that the Redskins’ locker room is tired of Big Al’s act. You might think otherwise based on the players’ public comments, but Mortensen’s analysis shouldn’t be ignored.
Adam Schefter told Mike and Mike this morning he doesn’t believe a deal will be done before the season opener [...] |
How About This For A Neil Walker Nickname
| When a player is having a rookie season like Neil Walker of the Pittsburgh Pirates, some buzz must be created.
A nickname. A great catch phrase if you will. The Pittsburgh Kid is overused. Another favorite that has been out there forever is Pine-Richland’s Neil Walker. Those aren’t real magical. No offense, Pittsburgh, no offense Pine Richland.
When used to refer to Walker, those are cliche. We have been trying to think of something better. Neil Walker The Baseball Shocker is sorta ok, but we wanted something better. It’s not an easy task. The thing we kept coming back to were the results from the [...]

Smoke Signals: Haynesworth thing becoming a ‘distraction’
| The talks between the Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans regarding a possible trade of disgruntled DT Albert Haynesworth, back to his old team, were obviously reported yesterday. Despite no news of an actual trade or imminent trade, GM Bruce Allen stated late yesterday that the Redskins were not trying to shop Haynesworth. Meanwhile, Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher stated that if the Redskins were interested in trading Haynesworth, the Titans would listen. So where the hell are we now? Same place as yesterday.
Some out there believe the Redskins players just tune this how Haynesworth/Shanahan feud out. However, LB Brian Orakpo [...]
Blount force
| LaGarrette Blount was surprised when he learned that he had been cut by the Tennessee Titans and was looking for a job. Blount had a good preseason with the Titans and felt his job was safe, backing up Chris Johnson. But Blount was released and the Buccaneers moved quickly to sign the troubled running back.
Blount, the former Oregon Duck, has a well documented past and some of it he rather forget. Blount set the Oregon season record for touchdowns with 17 in his first full season with them, showing a unique combination of speed and physical [...]

Fun with Joe Manchin and his Coal Bowl

Dillon Gee Sparkles in MLB Debut
| Mets fans….meet Dillon Gee, your newest pitching sensation. Ok, I’ll settle down a bit. I know it was only one start and it was the lowly Washington Nationals whom the 24-year old Gee befuddled tonight, but what the hell took the Mets so long to bring this guy up to the big show? Gee shut down the Nats, hurling 7 brilliant innings giving up only 2 hits while walking 4 and collecting 3 Ks in the process. In fact, Gee took a no-hot bid into the 6th before surrendering a lead-off single to notorious defensive Met killer Willie Harris.

Clay, Ball, and White… “OH MY”
| Badger fans got a glimpse of what the Badgers “3 Headed” running attack can all do last week against UNLV, this week I think it could even be better. San Jose St. allowed a staggering 257 yards rushing a week ago against Alabama in a 48 3 drubbing. If last week is any indication of what we have to look forward to this weekend, I think it’s fair to say that John Clay, Monte Ball, and James White will all reach 100 yards rushing Saturday. Three isn’t a crowd for this group either as we seen last week that they [...] | |

Mailbag question: Devin losing his red-shirt
Guys,
With the one play that Devin Gardner played, I’m guessing a lot of Michigan fans are wondering if that one play burned Devin’s red shirt. Not that I trust the source, but Wikipedia states “…However, NCAA rules are quite clear on the use of red-shirt status: any participation in any competition counts as a season of eligibility. For example, even a single play in a football game counts as participation for an entire season, so coaches cannot play red-shirt players at the end of a game simply to get them [...]

Get on the Nerdy Side of Baseball with New Testing Method
| If you’re like me, your mind raced through a number of possibilities when you first learned of the formal adoption of ASTM F2845. What? This is the first you’re hearing about it?
ASTM F2845, Test Method for Measuring the Dynamic Stiffness (DS) and Cylindrical Coefficient of Restitution (CCOR) of Baseballs and Softballs was announced on August 16, 2010 to replace older testing methods that proved to be less accurate compared to real world applications.
Dynamic stiffness is another name for the baseball’s hardness. The other subject of this ASTM standard is the Cylindrical Coefficient of Restitution; I will defer to the ASTM [...] |
